Obituary

Alfred Jack Mullen 87, Silvis, passed away on Saturday, November 26, 2011 at Illini Restorative Care, Silvis, Illinois. Memorial services are 11 AM Wednesday at 1st Presbyterian Church, East Moline. Visitation is 4-7PM Tuesday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline. Memorials may be made to 1st Presbyterian Church, the Activity Fund at Illini Restorative Care or the Master Gardener Planting Fund. He was born November 18, 1924 in Tucson, AZ, the son of Alfred John and Bessie (Felch) Mullen. He married Joan Manley on June 8, 1946 in La Jolla, CA. Jack received his BS from University of Arizona and Masters from University of Illinois. He was a farm manager for 6 years before serving as Farm Advisor for the University of IL Extension in Montgomery County. He moved to the Quad Cities in 1958 serving as Farm Advisor for Rock Island County until 1967. He then became an insurance agent working for Lincoln National, later Bankers Life and Principle Financial. Mr. Mullen was a Certified Life Underwriter. He was a member of 1st Presbyterian, where he served on the Board of Deacons, and Board of Trustees. He enjoyed fishing, camping and gardening. Jack was a Master Gardener and enjoyed working with youth planting gardens around the community. He served on the Rock Island County Fair Board. He was a member of the East Moline Kiwanis, Moline Elks, the VFW, served on the UTHS School Board and participated in the Honor Flight. Jack also volunteered as a reading tutor at Ridgewood Grade School, East Moline. During WWII he served in the US Navy on the mine sweeper, USS Scrimmage, in the Pacific Theater at the battles; Leyte Gulf, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Survivors include his wife Joan, children and spouse, John Grant and Linda Mullen, Davenport, Colleen Jordan, East Moline and Charles Leonard Mullen, East Moline, grandchildren Danelle J. Jordan, East Moline and Benjamin (Emma) Jordan, Chicago. He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother John Miner Mullen.
