IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Allan W.
Holmes
April 2, 1976 – May 4, 2021
Allan W. Holmes, 45, East Moline, passed away on Tuesday, May 4, 2021 at Genesis Medical Center-Illini Campus, Silvis due to complications from Covid-19. Visitation is 2-5 PM Saturday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a rosary will be recited at 1:30 PM. We all know of Allan's love of all things Harley-Davidson, so Harley attire is welcomed. Private family services will be held, and entombment will be in St. Mary's Mausoleum. Allan was born on April 2, 1976 in Moline, the son of Kenneth and Joannie (Harper) Holmes. He graduated from Moline High School, class of 1994 and later graduated from Hamilton Technical College. He married Rachel Burns on July 21, 2007 in Moline. Allan was skilled in several trades and was in the maintenance department at Lewis Machine and Tool, Eldridge, IA. You could always count on Allan to be up for an adventure, from playing softball and football as a child with the church to boy scouts where he may or may not have played hide and go seek instead of being in his bunk, to refusing to eat the beans that were prepared and living off peanut butter and jelly sandwiches all week. In his early adult years, you could usually find him at the end of the bar drinking a pop, playing pool or shooting darts. He was there for the people, never the booze. His greatest adventure started when he became a father. He loved nothing more than to coach the kids in all of their sports: baseball, soccer, wrestling and football. He always wanted to make sure they had the best of the best equipment and more than once he got scolded about whether buying the whole sporting goods store was really necessary. He loved to try new adventures with his boys— fishing, riding ATVs and sharing his love of a good knife. He made friends wherever he went—no trip to the store was quick, because he would run into someone he hadn't seen in a while and would need to catch up. His family knew it was going to be a very long trip if he ran into more than one person. It has even been said that on a family trip to Chicago he ran into someone he knew and had to stop to catch up. He made everyone feel special and important from his deep belly laugh to his huge smile and the bear hugs that sometimes made it hard to breath. He was also the first one to offer a helping hand no matter what, and the first one to jump in if someone needed him, or to host a dinner for a bunch of college kids that hadn't had a home cooked meal in a while. His kindness was known by everyone, but if you crossed a person he loved, you would wish you hadn't. You knew you were safe when he was around. Those that he called a friend were really family. A message from his wife, Rachel: Allan loved and cared about his friends and family deeply. I know that he would not want anyone to have to go through what he went through and the pain and heartache that the boys and I are suffering. Please go get vaccinated. He wants to see you all again--just not any time soon. Survivors include his wife Rachel, children; Wyatt Holmes, Colona, Taylor Holmes, Garrett Holmes and Jackson Holmes all at home, his parents, Kenneth and Joannie Holmes, Moline, sisters, Hannah Harper, Davenport and Victoria Tristan, Moline, cousin Brent Harper, Moline and a host of friends.
In lieu of flowers and gifts, a memorial fund has been established for his son's at the Gas & Electric Credit Union, Rock Island. Routing/ABA Number: 271188230 NMLS #483557
