Obituary

Funeral services for Anthony J. "Tony" Martel, 75, East Moline, are 10 AM Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Moline. Burial is in St. Mary's Cemetery, East Moline. Visitation is 4-8 PM Monday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a rosary will be recited at 6 PM. Anthony passed away on Thursday, February 28, 2008 at Genesis Medical Center-Illini Campus, Silvis. Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Church, where he was a member. Anthony was born May 10, 1932 in Rock Island, the son of John and Felecitas (Rojas) Martel. He married Josephine Ybarra and together they had six children. He later married Marian Westerbeck which grew the family to eleven children. Tony served in the US Navy during the Korean War. He started his work career with his brother Paul, at Pace Development, before becoming a tool and die designer at Caterpillar, in Mt. Joy. Mr. Martel coached Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball in East Moline for many years. He enjoyed doing yard work, traveling and family gatherings. Tony was a caring, loving son, father, and grandfather. He was quick to change plans to help and care for his family. Survivors include his children and spouses; Kevin Martel, East Moline, Anthony and Diana Martel, Montgomery, IL, Kelly and Barbara Martel, Woodridge, IL, Patrick and Theresa Martel, Cicero, IL, Christopher Martel, Chicago, and Clarissa Martel, East Moline. His fiance Marian Westerbeck, and the family extension Steven Westerbeck, Rochester, MN, Theresa and Steve Lewis, Apple Valley, MN and Marianne and Gerald Rauba, Moline, grandchildren(and spouses); Erika, Anthony (Leslie), Rachel, Jordan, Nathan, Trace, Cameron, Gary, Anna (Seth) McKay, John (Adelma) Huston, Christopher, Alexandra, Bianca, Angel, Jesus, Tiffany (Ryan) Dinsmore, Jeremy (Kate) Wilson, Nick Lewis, Jason and Blake Rauba, great-grandchildren Brittney, Makena, Blake, Gary Jr., Alexis, Gissell, Natalie, Isaiah and Anthony IV, sisters and brothers-in-law; Sara and Al Ramos, East Moline, Sally and John Cabrera, Galesburg and Rosemary and Phil Ordaz, Oak Forest, IL and a brother Max Martel, San Francisco, CA.
