Ben H. Ryan Jr., 86, East Moline, died Thursday, December 8, 2011 at Clarissa Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, IA. Funeral services are 10 AM Tuesday at St. Anne Catholic Church, East Moline. Burial is in St. Mary's Cemetery, East Moline. Visitation is 4-7PM Monday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Anne Catholic Church, East Moline or to the American Cancer Society. Ben was born June 5, 1925 in East Moline, the son of Ben H Ryan and Duella Soderstrom. He attended UTHS, Augustana and graduated from University of Illinois in 1950. He served in the US Army Signal Corps on the Burma Road during WWII. He worked for the Illinois Department of Public Accounts as a State Bank Examiner. He then worked for National City Bank on Wall Street and later in Latin America as a Foreign Branch Inspector. He met Gladys Kathryn Pohl in New York and was married in 1954. They both left employment at Citibank when Ben returned to East Moline to work at State Bank of East Moline, until he resigned as Chairman in 2006. Gladys died in 1985 after a two-year battle with cancer. Ben was an active community supporter, involved in Jaycees, Rotary International, Junior Achievement, Illinois Quad Cities Chamber of Commerce and a founder of the East Moline Foundation in 2011. Throughout his life, Ben played drums in symphony and Jazz bands while in school and the Army. He was also an avid pilot. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Benjamin and Laurie A. Ryan III, Austin Texas, grandchildren, Jack and Banks Ryan and a sister Nancy Wright, of Port Washington, NY. He is preceded in death by his wife Gladys and sisters; Elizabeth Ann Ryan and Maravene E. Fitzgerald. The family wishes to thank Dr. Costas Constantinou, the nurses and aides of his office, the nurses of Heartland Hospice and the nurses and aides of Clarissa Cook Hospice for all their encouragement and sincere care.
