Funeral services for Bertha J. Gabriel, 97, of Port Byron, will be 3:00 pm Saturday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, IL. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation will be one hour prior to services Saturday at the funeral home. Mrs. Gabriel died Monday, August 8, 2016, at Hope Creek Care Center, East Moline. Bertha Vervaecke was born August 10, 1918, in Austin, MN, the daughter of Edmond and Irma DeVriendt Vervaecke. She married August Gabriel December 25, 1936, in Prophetstown, IL. He died January 4, 1983. She and her husband owned and operated the Hillside Inn, Port Byron, for 27 years. She later worked at the Quad City Downs. Survivors include her children, Arline Husted, Port Byron, Edmond (Virginia) Gabriel, Chana, IL, and Thomas (Joyce) Gabriel, Broken Arrow, OK; 8 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; 8 siblings; and son-in-law, Ronald Husted. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.
