Former Silvis Mayor Bob Steele, 90, died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2018, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, Iowa. A Democrat, Steele was elected Silvis mayor in 1993 and served until 1997. He had previously retired in 1982 as a paint consultant for International Harvester Co., working from its East Moline plant. He was born in Adel, Iowa, on Dec. 11, 1927. As a boy, he survived severe pneumonia in the era before antibiotics. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1946 and was part of the occupying forces in Japan. During his time in country, he was in both Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the aftermath of their destruction by atomic bombs. He never forgot his Army serial number or the Japanese language he learned while on the island. He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Silvis, and East Moline American Legion Post 227. He was preceded in death in 2003 by his wife, Anne (DiIulio) Steele; his sisters, Arlene Schneirla and Delores Jenson; his parents, Ted and Ethel Steele; his sister-in-law, Edith Senatra; his brother-in-law, Albert Dumolien; and his mother and father in law, Antonio and Tomasina DiIulio. He is survived by his daughter, Terry Hines and her husband, Matt Hines of Hampton, Ill., and his son, Jim Steele and wife, Susan Cummings of Fayetteville, Tenn. Surviving grandchildren are Amy Borkhardt, Autumn Hines and Matthew Hines II. His great-grandchildren are Cylus Borkhardt, Matthew Hines III, Jackson Parker, Jerzey Weige and Jordan Parker. Other surviving family members include brother-in-law Phillip Senatra, brother-in-law Joseph DiIulio and wife Dee; brother-in-law Louis DiIulio and wife Marlene; and sister-in-law Della Dumolien. Among his surviving nieces and nephews are Daniel Senatra, David Senatra, Jeff Senatra, Julie Senatra, Mary Senatra, Susan Senatra, Tony DiIulio, Mary DiIulio, John DiIulio, Bill Dumolien, Tony Dumolien and Tom Dumolien. A Celebration of Life will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15, at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline. Afterward, a luncheon will be held at the East Moline American Legion, followed by a private interment at St. Mary's Cemetery, East Moline.
