Funeral services for Buddy James "Bud" Shay, 95, of East Moline, IL, will be 10 am Friday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Moline, IL. Entombment will be in St. Mary's Mausoleum, East Moline. Visitation will be 4-6 pm Thursday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a rosary will be recited at 3:30. Mr. Shay passed away Saturday, May 21, 2022, at his granddaughter's home.
Bud was born in a little house in Rock Island County about a mile north of Carbon Cliff, IL, the son of Lester and Bessie (Whitaker) Shay. He graduated from Carbon Cliff Grade School and the great Class of 1945 at United Township High School. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard on April 15, 1945 and was honorably discharged at the convenience of the government in May of 1946. He was the first to take flying lessons under the G.I. Bill at the Moline Airport in order to receive his private pilots license. He graduated from Dry Cleaning School in Silver Springs Maryland, in July of 1950. He married Mary Jo Boens, May 12, 1951 at St Mary's Catholic Church, East Moline. She passed away July 27, 2016. Bud worked for United Cork Co's, from 1951 thru 1957 as a Labor Superintendent and Sales Engineer. He then started Low-Temp Insulation Co. with a partner in 1958 and retired in 1985.
In 1987, Mary Jo and Bud enjoyed motor-homing the United States, finally finding what they were looking for in Bonita Springs, FL. Bud and many of his friends were well known for their many fishing trips in the bay's and passes at Bonita Springs in their pontoon boat the "African Queen."
Survivors include his daughter, Laurie Shay, East Moline; grandchildren, Jennifer (Greg) Erickson, Shayla (Brad) McMullen, and Derek (Alex) Sanchez; great grandchildren, Logan and Emilee McMullen and Sarah Phillips;and sister-in-law, Marilyn Shay, Ankeny, IA
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Jim Shay; sister, Shirley (Gilbert) Roman; and brother, William Shay.
Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society or St. Jude Children's Hospital.
