Charles Edward Barr, 87, formerly of Colona, passed away on Monday, July 9, 2012 at Good Samaritan Home, Geneseo. Funeral services are 11 AM Friday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline. Visitation is one hour prior to services. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline, where the Colona American Legion will conduct Military Honors. A memorial fund has been established. Charles was born June 8, 1925 in Matthews, MO, the son of George W. and Vernice (Stout) Barr. He graduated from Matthews High School and with the declaration of WWII, Charles joined the US Navy at age 18. He served a majority of his service time on the Destroyer USS Stockham, serving in the Allied 7th Fleet. He married Alta Ree Thacker on November 28, 1945 at the White County Courthouse in Arkansas. Charles went to work for the Rock Island Railroad in Silvis in 1951. After the bankruptcy of the RI Lines in 1979, he moved to Des Moines to work for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad, retiring in 1990. He had also worked at Louie DeWulf's Welding shop in Colona. Charles enjoyed wood working, painting and fishing. Survivors include his wife of nearly 67 years, Alta, sons, Micheal (Cheryl) Barr, Galena, IL and Ronald Barr, Silvis, four grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, a great-great granddaughter, and a sister Carolyn Swafford, Cheyenne, WY. He is preceded in death by his daughter Kathryn Ann.
