Funeral services for Charles D. Mekus, 90, East Moline, are 10 AM Thursday, December 27, 2007 at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, East Moline. Burial is in Rock Island National Cemetery, where the East Moline American Legion Post 227 will conduct military honors. Visitation is 4-7PM Wednesday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, with a Trisagion service at 7PM. Mr. Mekus died Thursday, December 20, 2007 at Trinity Medical Center-West Campus, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to the church. Charlie was born September 9, 1917 in East Moline, the son of Demos and Georgia (Angelopoulos) Mekus. He married Dinna Velon on June 6, 1948. She died December 13, 2003. He retired as a production scheduler from the former International Harvester, East Moline. He was a US Army veteran serving in the European Theater during WWII. While in the military his tasks included military government and civil affairs. Mr. Mekus was a devoted member of Assumption Church. He helped in any capacity the church needed from custodian to president of the board. Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law Demos and Linda Mekus, East Moline and Christ and Susan Mekus, East Moline, grandchildren; Denny (Molly) Mekus, Alaina Mekus and Melissa Mekus.
