Obituary

Funeral services for Cheryl L. Karben, 76, of East Moline, IL, will be 10 am Saturday, July 8, 2023 at the Van Hoe Funeral Home in East Moline. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation will be 4-6 pm Friday at the funeral home. Mrs. Karben passed away Saturday, July 1, 2023 at Genesis East, Davenport, IA.

Cheryl Neff was born July 12, 1946 in Moline, IL, the daughter of William and Lorene Decker Neff. She married James (Jim) Karben January 18, 1964, in East Moline and together they had two sons, Bill and John. Jim passed away October 30, 2014.

Despite Cheryl's hearing impairment, she successfully owned and operated an in-home daycare "Home Sweet Home" for 25 years with her friend and sidekick of over 40 years, Shirley Martin. She was blessed to care for the children of many families, including her grandchildren, over those years who still remember and love Cheryl to this day.

Cheryl loved the Lord and opened up her heart and home to the deaf community from 1976 up until the day she passed. She helped start and support deaf ministries within various local churches throughout the years while hosting Bible studies and participating in Christmas and Easter programs that not only ministered to the deaf but to the entire congregation.

Cheryl was always surrounded by friends and enjoyed teasing and joking with them during countless rounds of UNO. She loved her family, her cats (almost always named Lovey) and cherished her grandchildren and great grandchildren. To anyone that ever got to know Cheryl, she will be remembered for her smile, her hugs and unconditional love.

Survivors include her sons, William (Minita Paladino) Karben, Moline; and John (Sondra) Karben, East Moline; grandchildren, Abbey (Eric) Taets, Taylor (Scott) Davis, Jordan (Jacob Kedley) Karben, and Adam (Remi Johnson) Karben; great grandchildren, Nicolas Taets and Piper Davis; siblings, Chuck (Delores) Neff, East Moline, Larry (Janet) Neff, East Moline, and Kitty Walker, Colorado.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and siblings, Bob Neff, Denny Neff, Marilyn Larson, and Pat Green.

In lieu of flowers and gifts, please consider donating to an organization that supports the deaf community, a local humane center or animal shelter of your choice.

The family would like to thank Monika Couch, Missionary for the Deaf , the staff of Genesis Hospital Silvis/Davenport and the staff of Allure of the Quad Cities for their care.
