Obituary

Clyde D. Meier Jr., born July 6, 1925, near Booneville, Arkansas, passed away Saturday, October 9, 2021, at Park Vista, East Moline. He was the oldest child of Mabel and Clyde D. Meier, Sr. He had a brother, Robert, of San Diego, California, who died in July 2020, and a sister, Helen (Suchy), who resided in East Moline when she passed away in 2017.

Clyde's childhood years were spent in various Arkansas and Oklahoma towns, due to his father's employment with the Rock Island Line Railroad. The family later moved to Silvis, Illinois, where Clyde attended United Township High School in East Moline, Illinois, and was president of the class of 1943.

After graduating from high school, Clyde enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps where he trained as a navigator. After the end of World War II, he attended Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1949.

Beginning in 1949, Clyde taught fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grades in a two-room schoolhouse in Barstow, Illinois. In 1953, he became the principal of Wells School in East Moline which at the time was a separate school district. While working as a principal at Wells, Clyde also earned a Master of Science degree in Education from Western Illinois University by commuting to classes in Macomb, Illinois.

Shortly after Clyde started working there, Wells School merged with the East Moline grade school district, and Clyde spent the remainder of his career with that district. In 1962, Clyde began serving as principal of Ridgewood School, and, in 1974, he became principal of McKinley School. From 1975 through the end of his career in 1986, Clyde served as Assistant Superintendent and Business Manager of the East Moline school district. For many years during the summer, Clyde also worked as a surveyor for the City of Bettendorf, Iowa.

In 1948, Clyde married Mary E. Termont of East Moline, who passed away in 2006. They had three sons. Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Paul and Linda Meier of East Moline, IL, David and Sally Meier of Moline, IL, Alan and Mary Meier of Bloomington, IL; grandchildren, Meghan (Anthony) Ross, Alison (Joel Gentes) Meier, Erin Meier, Leah (Lance) Kennedy, Curtis (Kimberly) Meier, Brendan (Rebecca) Meier, and Travis Meier; great grandchildren, Landon and Simon Ross, Kellan, Evan, and Declan Kennedy, Rhodes and Xavier Gentes and Nolan and Adeline Meier; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Clyde and Mary enjoyed traveling, both abroad and in the United States, as well as attending plays and concerts. He was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church in East Moline and was active in the Illinois Retired Teachers Association for many years.

Clyde was a compassionate and generous man who never spoke ill of anyone. He was a universally respected gentleman who will be missed by all who had the good fortune to know him.
