Obituary

Funeral services for Daryl Ross Albaugh, 75, of Moline, IL, will be 11:00AM Tuesday at the First Christian Church, East Moline. Visitation will be from 9:00-11:00AM prior to services at the church. Committal Services will be held at the National Cemetery, Rock Island, IL at a later date. Daryl died Saturday, July 31, 2010 at his home surrounded by his family. Memorials may be made to the family, First Christian Church, East Moline, or Genesis Hospice. Daryl Ross Albaugh was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on September 24, 1934, to Otis E. and O. Grace Albaugh. The family moved to Mason City, Iowa, in 1939. Daryl attended schools in Mason City, graduating from Mason City High School in 1953. He attended Mason City Junior College, and Iowa State College in Ames. In 1955, Daryl and several friends joined the U.S. Navy and he attained the rank of 3rd Class Quartermaster, serving aboard the U.S.S. Rupertus DD851, stationed in Long Beach, CA. Daryl returned to Mason City in 1957 and on February 8, 1958, he was united in marriage to Carma Wilke at Wesley Methodist Church in Mason City. He worked at State Brand Creameries and in 1967 started his radio/television advertising career with KGLO Radio/Television. Daryl joined the Mason City Jaycees in 1967 and was elected President of the organization in 1969. The club had 180 members in 1967 and after becoming president, the membership rose to 285 and was nominated as the #1 Chapter in Iowa. In 1969 He was also president of the Iowa Jaycee Presidents' Association. In 1974 Lee Enterprise transferred Daryl and his family to WMDR Radio in Orion, Illinois, as Farm Advertising Director. When the station closed, he joined WOC Radio AM/FM as farm advertising salesman in 1976. Daryl became Farm Director of WOC Radio in 1978 and continued his career with WOC Radio, retiring in 1988. Daryl was a member of Masonic Benevolence Lodge 145, Mason City, since 1962. He was also a member of the Mason City Chamber of Commerce Ambassador's Club and was a chairman of the North Iowa Band Festival. While Farm Director he was a member of the National Association of Farm Broadcasters, Scott County Iowa, and Henry County Illinois Pork Producers, Scott County Iowa and Henry County Illinois Sheep/Lamb Producers, Scott County Iowa and Henry County Illinois Beef Producers, Henry County and Rock Island County Farm Bureaus. Daryl started doing the live farm broadcasting from the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds in 1979. Daryl was a member of the Colonel Davenport House and was a member of First Christian Church, East Moline, and a former member of Wesley Methodist Church in Mason City, Iowa. Daryl is survived by his wife, Carma; their five children, Laura Hartley, Orion, IL, Denise (Rick) Shamsie, Flint, TX, Keely (Jay) Hornick, Sherrard, IL, Kathleen (Ty) Bingham, Lynn Center, IL, and Darren (Lisa) Albaugh, Normal, IL; grandchildren, Bo (Nicole) Hartley, Samantha Hartley, Zachary Boehme, Amanda Shamsie-Brandt, Sarah Kirby, Carson Shamsie, John Hornick, Kelly Hornick, Steven Hornick, Grace Hornick, Jessica Bingham, Taylor Bingham, Annie Bingham, Emma Bingham, Coleman Albaugh, and Campbell Albaugh;great grandchildren, Madeline,Hannah, Kyleigh, Isabella, Carter Price and Audrey Grace; his sisters, Sandra Wilmarth, Maxwell, Iowa, Lavonne Kacer, Clear Lake, Iowa; sister-in-law, Candy Albaugh, Ames, Iowa; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Otis and Grace Albaugh, his in-laws Ernest and Alna Wilke, his brother, Mark Albaugh, and brother-in-law, Gerald Wilke. Daryl enjoyed family get-togethers, being with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, gardening, bird watching in their backyard, camping with his wife, and always having conversation with anyone, especially talking to World War II veterans.
