David Bruce Johnson, 86, of East Moline, passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at home, surrounded by his family.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at Van Hoe Funeral Home, East Moline, with visitation from 10:00 a.m. until service time. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery, East Moline, directly following services. Memorials can be made to the Moline High School Music Department or to Heartland Hospice.
David was born on September 27, 1939, in Moline, the son of Gilbert August and Leota (Sellers) Johnson. He married Bettyann Van De Velde on July 21, 1962, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in East Moline. She proceeded him in death on December 9, 2012.
David graduated from Riverdale High School, class of 1958. Following high school, he served in the U.S. Navy B division aboard the Essex Aircraft Carrier.
After returning home, David began working at Ametek, then later worked at John Deere PDC, Milan, retiring from John Deere Harvester, East Moline, at the age of 62.
He was an avid coin collector and well-respected coin grader. David enjoyed watching all sports but especially loved watching high school basketball. He also enjoyed keeping his yard in pristine condition and going out for catfish with friends and family.
David is survived by his children, Michele “Shelley” Castaneda, of Moline and Michael Johnson, of East Moline; grandchildren Nicholas Castaneda and Beverly Castaneda; 4 great grandchildren; sister Pamela Sigafoos; and nieces, Shea Sigafoos and Andrea (Josh) Hesse. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bettyann Johnson; grandson, Anthony Castaneda; and parents, Gilbert and Leota Johnson.
