Obituary

Graveside services for Dean Carney, 85, of Rock Island, IL, will be 10:30AM Monday at Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum, Rock Island, IL. Visitation will be 9:00-10:00AM Monday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, IL. Mr. Carney died Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at Unity Point Rock Island. In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorials may be made to the Quad City Animal Welfare Center, Milan, IL. Dean was born January 3, 1929, in Bedford, IA, the son of Clifton and Sylvia Stoner Carney. He married Dolores Altman December 3, 1949 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Rock Island. He served in the US Army where he was stationed in Alaska at Fort Richardson. During his stay in Alaska, Dean had been a Morse Code Operator. He retired in 1984 from the US Army Armament & Munitions Command at the Rock Island Arsenal, where he had worked for 37 years. He had been a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island, where he had been a member of the Altar and Rosary Society and Legion of Mary. He had been a Musicians Union member, playing trumpet for several Quad City dance bands, including the Ambassadors and the Carrol Baker Orchestra. He loved animals, fishing, music, and especially his family. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Dolores Carney, Rock Island; son, Jeff Carney, Rock Island; cousin, Dennis (Judy) Carney, Davenport, IA; sister-in- law, Virginia Altman, Moline; several nieces and nephews.
