Obituary

Funeral services for Donald Richard McMillin, 83, East Moline, are 10 AM Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Moline. Entombment is in St. Mary's Mausoleum, where the East Moline American Legion Post 227 will conduct military honors. Visitation is 4-7 PM Monday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a rosary will be recited at the conclusion of visitation. Don died Thursday, July 9, 2009 at the Lighthouse, Silvis. In lieu of flowers and statuary, a memorial fund has been established. Don was born November 1, 1925 in East Moline, the son of Harry and Augusta (Van Tieghem) McMillin. He attended St. Mary's Grade School and graduated from UTHS in 1943. He found a passion for music in High School that continued throughout his life. In January of 1944 he entered the US Navy and served his country proudly. He married Anna Mankoski on May 28th 1949. She died in 1999. They owned Don and Ann's Sunnyside Inn in Rapids City; he worked as a sheet metal contractor, and later retired as a collection officer for the Illinois Department of Revenue. Don was a musician in many area bands including Jimmy O'Dets Band, Rythmaires, Tunesmiths, Moonlighters, Rosie and the Polka Dots, and Rythmaires with Bill Koeller Organist from Alaska. He was a life member and former manager of the East Moline American Legion Post 227, Past Commander of the East Moline Silvis AMVETS, member and past chief of the De Gere of the 40 & 8, and life member of the East Moline VFW post 2056, member of the Musicians local 67, sheet metal workers local 91, AFAM lodge 898, Silvis, Blackhawk Shrine, Scottish Rite Valley of Moline and Kaaba Shrine, Davenport. He was also a member of the Moline Elks, East End Club, the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Order of Foresters and the Catfish Jazz Society. Don was a civilian volunteer for the East Moline Police Department in the Investigation Division and was instrumental in the formation of the East Moline DARE Program. Survivors include his children and spouses: Michael and Maggie McMillin, Jeffrey and Mary Jo McMillin and David and LaRea McMillin all of East Moline, grandchildren Adam and Jessica, great grandchildren Kaitlyn and Jacob, a brother Joseph of West Hills, CA and a sister Donna Nelson, Silvis. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Patricia Freyman, brothers Charles McMillin, Harry McMillin Jr and Art McMillin, and Robert McMillin.
