Donald Nicholas "Smitty" Smith, 80, East Moline, died Wednesday October 8, 2014 at his home. Funeral services are 10 AM Saturday at St. Anne Catholic Church, East Moline. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation is 3-7 PM Friday (Today) at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, with a rosary recited at 2:30 PM. In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorials may be made to St. Anne Church or Alleman High School, Rock Island. Don was born on April 7, 1934 in Shelbina, MO, the son of James R. and Irene Marie (Spencer) Smith. He married Annabelle Rockwell on February 6, 1954 in Silvis. Smitty was a fireman for over 29 years, with the East Moline Fire Department, retiring as Fire Chief in 1985.. He loved watching his grandchildren play sports, was an avid St. Louis Cardinal Fan and enjoyed listening to George Jones. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Annabelle, children and spouses, Donald and Donna Smith, Davenport, IA, Annette and August DeWilde, Green Bay, WI, David and Nancy Smith, Pleasant Prairie, WI and Kathy and Joseph Solis, Silvis, grandchildren, Jamie and Chad Smith, Davenport, Adam Wittenberg, Franklin, WI, Andrew Wittenberg and Alissa DeWilde, Green Bay, Nicholas, Allie and Annie Smith, Pleasant Prairie, Landen and Jordan Escontrias, Moline and Aaron Escontrias, Silvis, and eight great grandchildren and one due in November. The family would like to thank the East Moline Firemen, EMTs, Genesis Surgical Staff and Genesis Hospice for all of their caring and support.
