Dorothy J. Nixon DeMay, 89, Moline, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2009 at her home with her family at her side. Funeral services are 10 AM Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, East Moline, where she was a devoted life-long member. Visitation is 4-7 PM Friday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to Heartland Hospice of Bettendorf. Burial is in Rock Island Memorial Park Cemetery. She attended MacMurray College in Jacksonville, IL for two years and graduated from Illinois State University at Normal in 1942. She taught Kindergarten for 25 years in East Moline and Carbon Cliff. Her first year of teaching was at Lincoln School in the same classroom she attended as a child. Dorothy finally retired in 1977. She was past president of the East Moline City Club. She was a member of the Blackhawk Unit of Retired Teachers, and a member of the Clara Lodge #118 of the Moline Viking Club. During her years of teaching, Dorothy collected turtles and after retirement she collected gingerbread items. She enjoyed playing bingo and loved music and dancing. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her passions. Dorothy was born on June 16, 1920 in Moline, the daughter of Anton and Bessie Johnson. She married Robert W. Nixon on May 8, 1943. He passed away on January 15, 1975. They had three children; Rita Hanssen of Moline, Janet Kline of Texas and Tom (Carolann) of Arizona. She remarried on March 16, 1985 to Howard DeMay. He passed away on January 24, 2002. Howard had four children; Patricia King of Iowa, Michael (Debra) DeMay of Davenport, Nannette (Mark) Holmes of Michigan and Lisa (Michael) Blunck of Peoria, IL. Additional survivors are her sister-in-law Virginia Bone, nephew Doug (Diane) Johnson, Niece Carolyn (Gary) Slaats, step sister Sally Accurso, Step nephew David (Carolyn) Haskins, niece Sharon (Jere) Dickey and their children and grandchildren. Dorothy's grandchildren include; Wendy (the late Brad) Speer of Moline, Jennifer (Sterlynn) Berry of Texas, Jason (Gina) Kline of Louisiana, Jim (Amy) Breedlove of Texas and Jennifer Nixon of Arizona. Her step-grandchildren are Chris (Holly) Holmes of Michigan, Joshua Holmes of Michigan, Cameron and Alexis Blunck of Illinois, Andrea DeMay of Florida, Zachary DeMay of Iowa, Jessie Miller of Missouri and Tony (Megan) Zier of Rock Island. Mrs. DeMay's great-grandchildren include; Alan, Kyle, and Joshua Speer of Moline, Ashley, Cole, Drew and Jacob Breedlove of Texas, Kiondra, Jalen, and Zachary Harvey of Texas, Kamryn Berry of Texas and Aubrey Kline of Milan, and step-great-grandchildren; Izabel, Chloe Holmes, Alex, Jamie and Andrew Miller and Toddie DeMay. Dorothy had two life-long friends; Dorothy Scharer who is now deceased and Lucille Campagna, numerous other relatives and an endless list of friends she had made over the years. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Robert and Charles, sister Helen, her first born grandchild David Claussen, sister-in-law Nell, and a nephew Tony. We Love You!
