Jean passed away October 9, 2008, at Genesis Medical Center Illini Campus in Silvis IL after a long and courageous battle with poor health. She was born in Iowa City, IA March 24, 1921. She was adopted by Guido and Mary Wyland. She was a true Hawkeye from the day of her birth. Her father played with the Hawkeyes and later the Rock Island Independents (Chicago Bears). When the Great Depression hit the United States, the Wyland family moved to New Jersey where they owned and operated a grocery store. As Jean reached high school age she attended and graduated from the Villa de Chantal in Rock Island in 1940. Shortly after high school Jean enlisted in the United States Navy. She served during World War II. In 1946 she married Frank L. Young in Rock Island. He preceded her in death in November 1989. They had two children Stephanie (Javier) Valdes, Moline, and Joel Young, Davenport, IA. There are four grandchildren, Jonathan (Melinda) Young of Milan, IL, Rich (Nikki) Young of East Moline, Amalia Valdes of Moline, Guillermo (Jill) Valdes of Moline and eight great-grandchildren, Graham, Ashley, Devon, Baylee, Emme, Taylor, Cody and Cole. There are two step grandchildren. Jean is also survived by her brother and sister-in - law, Richard (Kay) Hinkleman of Florissant, MO. Some of Jean's happiest memories are the 27 years she spent as the school secretary at St Mary's Catholic Grade School in East Moline. She retired from this job in 1988. Previously she had worked at East Moline Lumber. She loved her annual trip to Brainerd, MN to go fishing. If you asked anyone who knew Jean they would say that a Hawkeye victory would be at the top of her greatest memories. She attended Hawkeye football games before she could walk. She purchased season tickets after serving in the war until she became too ill to attend games when she was 83. She was preceded in death by her parents and her grandson Alberto. Memorials may be made to the University of Iowa, Department of Athletics Football Program. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.vanhoe.com
