Funeral services for Elmer F. DeSmet, 92, of Rock Island, IL, will be 1:00PM Friday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island, IL. Burial will be in Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation will be 4:00-7:00PM Thursday (today) at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, IL, where a liturgy service will be held at 4:00PM. Mr. DeSmet died Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at St. Anthony Nursing and Rehab Center, Rock Island. Memorials may be made the the family. Elmer was born August 25, 1919 in East Moline, the son of Maurice and Martha Lannoo DeSmet. He served in the US Army during WWII. He married Lillian Alice Begyn September 14, 1946 in Matherville, IL. He retired from the State Bank of East Moline in 1984, after 43 years of service. He had served as East Moline City Treasurer from 1953-1957. During the 1950's he had played in various dance bands in the Quad City Area. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Lillian Desmet of Rock Island; daughter, Diane DeSmet of Auburn, CA; son, David (Mary) DeSmet of Milan, IL; grandchildren, Keri (Chris) Andino, Kelly (Valerie) DeSmet, Drew DeSmet, and Shawndar Johal; great-grandchildren, Gabriella, Julia, and Ella. He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Albert and Maurice DeSmet.
