Funeral services for Emanuel G. Gomez, 92, of East Moline, IL, will be 10:00 AM Saturday at Christ the King Catholic Church Moline, IL. Entombment will be in St. Mary's Mausoleum, East Moline, IL. Visitation will be 4-8 PM Friday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, IL, where a rosary will be recited at 6:30 PM. Mr. Gomez died Tuesday, February, 7, 2006 at his home. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association. Emanuel was the son of Martin and Candelaria (Guerrero) Gomez. His father, Martin was the first Mexican family man to arrive in Silvis, who settled in the Rock Island Lines, Silvis Yards. Emanuel was born July 25, 1913, the first Mexican baby born in a boxcar. Growing up in the box car seemed to be very natural to Emanuel, according to a 1980's Quad City Times interview. He married Ladrina Calderon, September 12, 1936 in Moline, IL. He had worked for the Rock Island Lines for 48 years. He later worked for Illini Hospital for 10 years. While working for the railroad, he had been active with the local union. He had played and managed for the Aztec's, the Mexican Baseball League during the 1930's and 1940's. He loved playing golf and bowling. He was a St. Louis Cardinal Fan and a Green Bay Packer Fan. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, Moline and the Catholic Order of Foresters. Survivors include: his wife of 69 years, Ladrina Gomez of East Moline, IL; daughters and sons-in-law, Esther and Genaro Zamarripa of Sterling, IL, Joann and Benjamin Olvera of Moline, IL, Sally Sierra of Silvis, IL; sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald and Susan Gomez of Coal Valley, IL, Robert and Deborah Gomez of Coal Valley, IL; 18 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; sisters, Rose Gomez of Silvis, IL, Mary Riordan of Moline, IL, Jenny Cortez of Hampton, IL; brother, August Gomez of East Moline, IL. He is preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Andrew Olvera; sisters, Solelad Gomez, Amelia Hernandez; brothers, Frank, Samuel, Martin, and John Gomez; son-in-law, Louis Sierra, who died in 2002.
