Obituary

Evelyn Marie Smallwood, a cherished matriarch and vibrant spirit, peacefully departed this life on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at MercyOne Genesis – Illini, Silvis. She was 97 years old and leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter that will resonate within the hearts of all who knew her.

Evelyn was born on February 10, 1929, in Detroit, MI, to the late James and Elsie (Wallgast) Bledsoe. A devoted mother, she first married Richard Fleshman, with whom she raised three beloved children before their separation. In the years that followed, Evelyn found companionship in her second marriage to Elmo Smallwood, who preceded her in death in 1978.

With unwavering passion, Evelyn dedicated herself to her career as a beautician, serving her clients with kindness until she was 95 years old. She also embraced her entrepreneurial spirit as a MaryKay saleswoman, sharing beauty and empowerment with those around her. Evelyn had a zest for life—she adored dancing, embarking on Harley Davidson motorcycle rides, tending to her garden, and bowling. Her adventurous spirit took her on travels across the globe, from Europe to Australia and Japan, but her heart always returned to the joy of family and the cherished Saturday pancake breakfasts she lovingly prepared.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at Van Hoe Funeral Home in East Moline. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service, allowing friends and family to gather in remembrance of Evelyn's remarkable life. She will be laid to rest at Greenview Memorial Gardens in East Moline. Memorials may be made in Evelyn’s name to the Quad City Animal Welfare Center in Milan or to Rescued in Silvis, IL.

Evelyn is survived by her children, Linda Shelton, Anna (Donnie) Johnson, and Tom (Debra) Fleshman; 6 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmo Smallwood; parents; siblings, Lila Gargano and Bob Bledsoe; and grandson, Gauge Sletten.
