IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gary L.
Karenke
January 23, 1952 – February 10, 2026
Gary L. Karenke, 74, of East Moline, passed away Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at his home.
Visitation will be from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, February 15, 2026, at Van Hoe Funeral Home, East Moline. A private funeral service will be held on Monday, February 16, 2026, at Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family for the grandchildren’s education fund.
Gary was born January 23, 1952, in Rock Island, the son of Lyle and Dorothy (Berhenke) Karenke. He married Carole Wake on January 22, 1972, and together they built a life centered on hard work, family, and time spent outdoors.
Gary retired after more than 40 years as an assembler at John Deere Harvester. A proud graduate of United Township High School, Class of 1970, he remained closely connected to the community, especially through his many years of involvement with the UT Booster Club.
Known for his lighthearted nature and easy smile, Gary had a gift for making people feel welcome. That was especially true at the cabin, his favorite gathering place. Whether fishing, boating, or sitting by the fire, Gary was happiest when family was together and water was near.
Sports were another lifelong passion. Gary spent many years playing competitive softball and coaching.
Above all else, Gary cherished his family. He rarely missed a game or event and was always his grandchildren’s biggest fan.
Gary is survived by his wife, Carole Karenke; children, Chad (Amy) Karenke, Jessica (John) Karenke-Burke, and Sarah (Rob) Taets; grandchildren, Blake (Caitlyn), Dylan, Ethan, Micah, Brinly, Lennon, and Tessa; great-grandson, Jace; sister, Gloria (Dan) Berthoud; brother, Greg (Tracy) Karenke; brother-in-law, Ed Williams, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Linda Williams and Lyle Karenke; mother and father in-law, Joanne and John Bowman; and granddaughter, Lily Taets.
Gary will be remembered for his steady presence, selfless nature, love of the water, and the way he always showed up for his family.
