Obituary

Gary Wayne Sutton, 59, of East Moline, IL, died Monday, September 5, 2005 at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis, IL, after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Friday at Christ United Methodist Church, East Moline, IL. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Rock Island, IL. Visitation will be 2-7 PM Thursday at the church, where a Masonic Service will be held at 1:30 PM by the Moline Doric Lodge 319. In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or Christ United Methodist Church, East Moline. Gary was born September 13, 1945 in Moline, IL, the son of Lewis E. "Smokey" and Gestal "Kay" (Weekly) Sutton. He married Diana Kearney, December 14, 1974 at the Watertown Baptist Church, East Moline. He was a graduate of UTHS Class of 1963, St. Ambrose Class of 1972 and the F.B.I. National Academy. He proudly served in the US Army in Vietnam. Gary joined the East Moline Police Department in 1974 and served the city for 26 1/2 years, the last 6 1/2 as Chief of Police. Following retirement, he was Director of Training for Mobile Team Training Center IV. During his distinguished career he was an active in numerous organizations including: Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, East Moline Police Benevolent Association, East Moline Fraternal Order of Police, Quad City Council of Police Chiefs (Past President), Quad City Law Enforcement Group, Quad City Metropolitan Enforcement Group (MEG) Board of Directors, Quad City Gang Task Force Policy Board, International Association of Chiefs of Police, Center Station Board, Illinois Local Governmental Law Enforcement Officers Training Board, Rock Island County Council on Addictions Board of Directors, Illinois Police Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, East Moline American Legion, Masonic Lodge, East Moline Rotary Club, East Moline Exchange Club and East Moline Youth Baseball (Past Commissioner), where he and an excellent Board of Directors created Northeast Park Ball Diamond. In addition to a full professional life, he was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, East Moline. Gary enjoyed John Wayne, golfing, Franks Pizza and spending time with a very large and loving family that will miss him greatly. Survivors (and spouses) include: his wife, Diana Sutton of East Moline, IL; daughter, Sara Sutton of Davenport, IA; son, Matthew Sutton (Stephane) of Clarksville, TN; grandson, Colton Sutton of Clarksville, TN; sister Barbara "Bobbi" (Dale) Hansen of East Moline, IL; mother-in-law, Evelyn Kearney of Davenport, IA: sister-in-law, Carol (Bob) Behnke of Terre Haute, IN, Sandra (Jim) Stulir of Moline, IL, Beverly Gahagan of Rock Island, IL; brothers-in-law, Jack (Mary Lynn) Kearney of Moline, IL, Steve Kearney of Larkspur, CO, Kelly Ambrose of Milwaukee, WI; 20 nieces and nephews; 29 great nieces and nephews.
