Obituary

Funeral services for Gaston "Stoney" VanderBeke, 88, of East Moline, IL, will be 10:30 AM Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church East Moline, IL. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Rock Island, IL. Visitation will be 4-7 PM Wednesday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., where a rosary will be recited at 3:30PM prior to the visitation. Mr. VanderBeke died Monday, May 01, 2006 at home. Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Moline, IL, where he had been a member. Stoney was born March 9, 1918, in East Moline, IL, the son of Maurice and Clara (Versluis) VanderBeke. He married Edna Martin in 1940. He later married Geraldine "Gerry" Diederich, August 18, 1948 in Pekin, IL. He was a St. Ambrose Academy graduate. He served in the US Army during WWII. He co-owned and operated VanderBeke Cleaners, East Moline, IL, and owned and operated Silvis Liquors, Silvis, IL. He had been a member of the East Moline American Legion and Short Hills Country Club, East Moline. Survivors include: his wife of 57 years, Gerry VanderBeke of East Moline, IL; daughters and sons-in-law, Sybil and Richard Goodwin of Cambridge, IL, Susan and Joseph Weinert of Geneseo, IL; son and daughter-in-law, Marc and Deborah VanderBeke of East Moline, IL; grandchildren, Richard McSwain, Mary Thompson, Adam McSwain, Sam Weinert, Annie Weinert, Joseph VanderBeke, and Kathryn VanderBeke; 6 great grandchildren; brother, Lorney VanderBeke of East Moline, IL.
