Obituary

Funeral services for George H. Baayen Jr., 86, of East Moline, will be 11:00 AM Friday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation will be from 9:30 AM until services Friday at the funeral home. Mr. Baayen died Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at Genesis, Silvis, IL. George was born February 18, 1928, in Eldon, IA, the son of George and Sarah Delta Harding Baayen Sr. He married Twila Laughlin. He later married Alice (Allman) Stearns March 30, 1952 in Lancaster, MO. He served in the US Air Force during WWII and the Korean Conflict. George had been very proud of his service to his country and had enjoyed every minute of it. He retired from the Rock Island Lines March 30, 1980, as a switchman. He had been a 50 year member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, where he had been very active. He had been a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Alice Baayen, East Moline; daughter, Ava (Victor) Andrews, Savanna, MO; son, Bob (JoEllen) Stearns, Murphy, NC; grandchildren, Aaron Snook, Fr. Michael Stearns, and Christopher (Candius) Stearns; great grandchildren, Jenna, Anna, Michael, Steven, Sam, and David Stearns. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Martin Stearns, and sisters, Willa Mae Bostwick and Virginia Rose Baayen. Memorials may be made to Disabled American Veterans (DAV).
