Obituary

George A. Goebel, 73, of Bettendorf, IA died Monday, February, 14, 2011 at the family farm in rural Scott Co., IA. George was born on June 25, 1937 in Creston, IA to John and Mary Kopf Goebel. He attended Roosevelt Jr. High and High School in Des Moines, IA. One of his favorite high school memories was playing in the State football championship. In 1960, he graduated from Drake University Law School and began practicing law in Davenport, IA with his uncle Howard Kopf. He returned to Drake every year for the Drake Relays; 2010 marked his 57th year of service as a Drake Relay Official. In June 2010, George was honored as a 50 year member of the Iowa State Bar Association. He was also a member of the Scott County Bar Association. In addition to his law practice, farming was a lifelong passion. He enjoyed breeding Black Angus cattle, riding horses and had a great appreciation for the outdoors. George and Lynn VanderBeke were married on May 21, 1966 in East Moline, IL. He was devoted to his children Elizabeth (Lionel Hawkins) and Anne (Sean Goodman) and his grandchildren Emily and Beatrice (Goodman). A source of immense joy, he loved driving the grandchildren to and attending all of their activities. A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 4th, 11am at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Davenport, IA. A private committal service will be held at St. Mary's Mausoleum, East Moline, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Camp Shalom or Rivermont Collegiate.
