Funeral services for George E. Matheis, 83, Port Byron, are 1PM Monday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd. East Moline. Burial is in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation is 2-5PM Sunday at the funeral home. Mr. Matheis died Thursday, February 21, 2008 at Illini Restorative Care, Silvis. A Memorial fund has been established. George was born July 13, 1924 in Port Byron, the son of David and Anna (Bachman) Matheis. He married Rose M. Coyne on May 2, 1953 in East Moline. She died April 18, 1990. George retired in 1985 as a mechanic from the former International Harvester East Moline Works. George would go out of his way to help repair a broken down automobile of a friend or stranger. Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law Dr. Stephen and Diane Matheis, East Moline and Mark and Patty Matheis, Clinton, IA, and grandchildren Joe and Katie Matheis. In addition to his wife, a sister Ann Hackbarth and brothers Louis, Lawrence and Vince preceded him in death.
