Funeral services for George A. Mitchell, 69, Silvis, are 1:30 PM Monday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline, where the East Moline American Legion Post 227 will conduct military honors. Visitation is 3-6PM Sunday at the funeral home. George died Thursday, February 5, 2009 at his home. A memorial fund has been established. He was born October 14, 1939 in Dow, IL, the son of Charles and Dorothy (Schaff) Mitchell. He married Phyllis Surratt on November 23, 1966 in Rock Island. He served in the US Navy as a navigator from 1958 until 1964. George retired in 1998 from shipping at John Deere Harvester, East Moline. In retirement he ran Mitchell's Maintenance. George had been an assistant with the Jesse Cornell Junior Panther Basketball Program, played basketball and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye Fan. He had run in the Bix 7 and the East Moline Firecracker Run for many years. He enjoyed fishing, but found his greatest joy in being a family man, and being with his grand and great grandchildren. Survivors include his wife Phyllis, children and spouses Paul and Lisa Mitchell, Geneseo, Darrell and Krista Mitchell East Moline and Cristel Mitchell East Moline, stepchildren Connie Coleman, Roodhouse, IL, Kevin Surratt and Karen Surratt, both of Quincy, IL, ten grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren a sister and brother-in-law Reba and Elmer Witwer of Winchester, IL and brother and sister-in-law Clyde and Sandy Mitchell of Woodson, IL, and a special friend Pat Gillespie of Colona. George is preceded in death by his parents, daughter Dee Ann Mitchell and 3 brothers.
