The Master Weaver's shuttle has finished his beautiful design in the life of Georgia Adel Von Ahnen who was born October 14, 1926 in Davenport, IA to Otto and Melissa Waldorf Von Ahnen. She married Henry 'Hank' Van Melkebeke August 3, 1964, in Chicago, IL. He preceded her in death February 14, 1997. Georgia retired as Group Manager Operator Services from U.S. West, Des Moines, IA after starting her career with Northwestern Bell in Davenport. She had 29 plus years of service. She was a former member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Moline and its Circle 3 Altar Society and C.A.R.E. committee. Then she became a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Silvis, IL where she was also a member of Our Lady's Women's Group. Her other memberships included: Telephone Pioneers of America, Telephone 21 Club, NWB-USW-Quest Retiree Association, INC., Life Member and past President of East Moline American Legion Auxiliary Unit #127, Rock Island County Salon NO. 137 Eight and Forty, Genesis Medical Center Illini Campus Auxiliary, Two Rivers Y, Belgium Culture Center, German-American Heritage Center, East End Club, AARP and R.S.V.P. She and Hank enjoyed traveling in the U.S., Belgium, France, Germany and Hawaii. Hank's cousins, Ludgarde and Daniel were their tour guides in Belgium, France and Germany. The highlights of their trips were visiting beautiful Belgium, Omaha Beach and Point de Hos. After Hank's passing she continued to do some traveling. Also, spending time with her siblings became very special. She enjoyed volunteering which included a summer in Inez, KY with the Christian Appalachian Program. Local groups for which she volunteered included the Genesis Medical Center Illini Campus and Beacon Harbor Visitors Center, East Moline. This was especially enjoyable in that she loved the beautiful Mississippi. She once said that the Mississippi was just like life: Everyday there was something different about it. She enjoyed spending time with friends whether it was over coffee, lunch or a GOOD game of cards!!! Also, the time spent at the 'Y' where she enjoyed the High Energy Aquatic Class. These were all good times spent with friends: Friends are like treasures in the sand, Like seashells, waiting to be found Every friendship Like every shell has a beauty all its own. She was an avid CUBS and Iowa Hawkeye fan. She was hoping to see the Cubs win the WORLD SERIES!! Survivors include her siblings and their spouses: Katherine (Kay) and Larry Ladehoff, Palos Hills, IL, Colette Paget, Minneapolis, MN, Dwight and Sue Von Ahnen, Chicago, IL; 13 nieces and nephews; and 3 stepchildren. Funeral Services for Georgia A. Van Melkebeke will be Monday, November 1, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Silvis, IL. Burial will be in National Cemetery Rock Island IL. Visitation will be at Van Hoe Funeral Home LTD on Sunday from 2-5PM with a rosary at 2PM, and an East Moline American Legion Auxiliary Unit 227 service at 4:30PM. Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Grace Catholic Academy or to the Nurses Scholarship Rock Island County Salon #137 Eight & Forty.
