Graveside services for Halbert E. "Hal" Norton, 92, of Moline, IL, will be 2:30PM Friday at the National Cemetery, Rock Island, IL, where the East Moline American Legion Post 227 will provide military honors. Anyone wishing to attend graveside services must meet at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., by 2:00 PM. Visitation will be 5-7 Thursday (today) at the funeral home. Mr. Norton died Wednesday, March 15, 2006 at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis, IL. Memorials may be made to Sandra Norton (his daughter). Hal was born July 29, 1913 in West Grove, IA, the son of Charles and Euterpa (Miller) Norton. He married Trilla Johnson, February 8, 1947 in Carbon Cliff, IL. She died May 7, 1989. He served in the US Army during WWII, where he was stationed in North Africa and France. He had worked in the experimental division of Case IH and John Deere, he retired from American Air Filter, July 29, 1978. He had been a member of First Christian Church Moline, IL and a member of the Silvis VFW since 1933. He was a loving father and friend. You couldn't miss Hal; he was always wearing white pants, a red belt, and red tennis shoes. He was always walking, his destination, to see his friends at the Café Piccalo and the 16th Street Maidrite. Hal was quite a character, he enjoyed putting garlic on all his food, smoking cigarillos, and drinking Jack Daniel's "for medicinal purposes only". He was an Avid St. Louis Cardinals Fan and Green Bay Packer Fan. Survivors include: daughter, Sandra Norton of Lincoln, IL; stepson, Charles Kriegermeir of AZ;several nieces and nephews; special friend and caregiver, Pam Frankville of Moline, IL.
