Obituary

Funeral services for Harland "Harley" Shannon, 73, of Hampton, IL, will be 11:00 AM Friday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, IL. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Rock Island, IL. Visitation will be 4-7 PM Thursday (today) at the funeral home. Mr. Shannon died Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island, IL. Memorials may be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association. Harley was born March 5, 1933, the son of Russell and Louva (Goe) Shannon. He married Patricia Bulens, November 2, 1957, in Rock Island, IL. Harley will always be remembered as a loving husband, dad, grandpa, brother and friend. Along with being a great family man, he was also an outstanding athlete and coach touching the hearts and lives of so many teammates and players. All those that knew Harley appreciated his dependability and loyalty. He had a great sense of humor, a love of people and enjoyed telling stories. Harley also was in the Department of the Army of the 25th Military Police Unit serving in Korea & Hawaii from 1953-1955. He often told the story of guarding Marilyn Monroe when she visited the troops in Korea. After leaving the military, Harley dedicated 40 years of service to the former Iowa Illinois Gas & Electric Company as a journeyman lineman. Survivors include: his wife of 48 years, Patricia Shannon of Hampton, IL; daughters and son-in-law, Peggi and Mark Boettcher of Bettendorf, IA, Patti Strong of Hampton, IL; son and daughter-in-law, H. Dennis and Kim Shannon of Bettendorf, IA, grandchildren, Jenni, Brian, Brody, Chad, Judy, Bryce, Jessica, Becca, and Kyli; sisters and brother-in-law, Marian Sands of Hampton, IL, Veronika and Milton Sherwood of Coal Valley IL, Aurelia Miller of Rockville MD; brothers and sisters-in-law, Marty and Dorothy Shannon of Rock Island, IL, Arnold and Catherine Shannon of Woodbury NJ, John and Sue Shannon of Hampton, IL; sister-in-law, Tegwin Shannon of Rock Island, IL; several nieces and nephews.
