Funeral services for Harold E. Hellgren, 94, of Moline, IL will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, IL. Burial will be in Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island, IL. Visitation will be Tuesday, one hour prior to service time at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the East Moline American Legion Post 227. Mr. Hellgren died November 29, 2013, in Chandler, AZ where he was residing at the home of his niece and nephew, Linda and Ed Winkelbauer. Harold was born December 8, 1918 in Moline, IL, the son of Ture and Murel Granell Hellgren. He married Marjorie Griffin of Moline, IL, on August 16, 1947, in East Moline. He worked for Ametek, Corp. as supervisor for 40 years and retired in January 1982, in Temecula, Calif. Harold served in the Army during World War II with H.A.M. Ordnance Company in Marseille, France. He and Marjorie loved boating, traveled the Mississippi River going to St. Louis and Minneapolis/St. Paul several times. He played tournament horseshoes, winning Senior Olympic Medals in Arizona and Illinois. Since 1985, he and Marjorie had spent the winter months in Tempe and Mesa, AZ. Being diehard Chicago Cubs fans, they watched the team during practice and all the spring training games in Mesa. Since they had been following the team for so many years, many of the players and their families knew them. He was a 50 plus years member of East Moline Legion Post 227 and East Moline AmVets Post 145. Survivors include several nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as his brother-in-law, Larry Liedtke, and sister-in-law, Ferne Gaumer. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and brother Herbert.
