Funeral services for Harry V. Arvanis, 87, of East Moline, IL, will be 10:00AM Monday at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, East Moline. Burial will be in Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island, IL. Visitation will be 2:00-5:00PM Sunday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a Trisagion (Prayer) Service will be held at 4:30. Mr. Arvanis died Wednesday, December, 01, 2010 at his home. Memorials may be made to Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, East Moline. Harry was born February 17, 1923 in East Moline, the son of Harry and Myrtle Ingle Arvanis. He married Alfreda Wendell July 5, 1942 in Moline, IL. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He had been highly decorated for his achievements and bravery. He received the Silver Star, Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal & Bronze Star Attachment (Triple), World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal & Germany Clasp, Combat Infantryman Badge 1st Award, Expert Infantryman Badge, and the Belgian Fourragere. He had been a Golden Glove Boxer and had played Semi-Pro Football. He enjoyed woodworking and square dancing, and had been an accomplished porcelain artist. He retired from the Carpenters Local # 166 in 1985, after 50 years of service. He had also owned and operated Hobby House Ceramics, East Moline, for 20 years. Survivors include his wife Alfreda Arvanis of East Moline, sons, Harry (Linda) Arvanis of East Moline, John (Karen) Arvanis of Port Byron, IL, Sam (Virginia ) Arvanis of Romeoville, IL; 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren. Harry is preceded in death by his parents, daughter Sandra Meewes, grandson Corey Mark Arvanis, sister, Annie , brother, Grant. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.vanhoe.com
