On Thursday, July 28, 2016, Hazel L Long chose to peacefully make her journey to Heaven. Visitation is 3-6 PM Sunday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline. Funeral services are 10 AM Monday, August 1, 2016 at Christ United Methodist Church, East Moline. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Memorials may be made to Christ United Methodist Church, East Moline. Hazel was born on August 1, 1925 in Shawnee, OK, the daughter of Charles and Era (Pittman) Birlew. Her family moved to the Quad Cities in 1938. During her senior year at United Township High School (1943), she met the love of her life, Marion L. Long. They were married on May 10, 1945 and shared 67 glorious years together. Hazel was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother (oh those hugs and kisses),care giver and domestic engineer. She helped America's youth assisting with Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Sunday School at Church and the PTA. She found time to work away from home and family, retiring from Palmer Electric Co, Washington, IN. She will be fondly remembered for her never ending smile, wit, charm glowing brown eyes, beautiful red hair and her loving, giving and caring heart. Those who will cherish her memory are her children, Steven Long (Rita Shake), Washington, IN; Robert (Nedra) Long, Plainville, IN; Susan (Steve) Doye, Moline; Beth Ann Wittmer, Loogootee, IN; 7 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. Rest peacefully lovely lady, we're sure gonna miss you! Those making their journey to heaven before Hazel are her husband, parents, brother Charles G Birlew, son-in-law Tim Wittmer, granddaughter Amy Joy Long and great granddaughter Delainey Williams. The family wishes to thank Dr. R. Castro and staff, Unity Point and Hope Creek Care Center for all the T.L.C. given to Hazel.
