Funeral services for Helen W. Karas, 99, East Moline, will be 11:00 AM Thursday at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, East Moline. Burial will be in Moline Memorial Park Cemetery, Moline, IL. Visitation will be 4:00 -7:00 PM Wednesday, at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a Trisagion (prayer) service will be held at 6 PM. Mrs. Karas died Saturday, April 5, 2008, at home. Memorials may be made to Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, East Moline. The Former Helen Wilhelmina Raptopoulos was born March 19, 1909 in Istanbul, Turkey, the daughter of John and Despina Raptopoulos. A Turkish national of Greek decent, she immigrated to the United States in 1922 and settled with her family in Moline. She was a 1929 graduate of Moline High School. She married Sam V. Karas in 1931. He preceded her in death in 1972. Helen was a very active member of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in East Moline, where she served in many capacities, including church secretary and treasurer. Helen also served as president of the church's Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society. Helen worked with her husband in their business, the East Moline Produce Company until 1964. In 1971 she began work as a part time teller at the Metro Bank in East Moline, retiring in 1999. Survivors include: her sister, Mary Giovanis; a niece, Lucia (John) Podraza of Chicago, IL; and a great niece, Amelia Podraza of Chicago. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Nick Raptis.
