Obituary

Helen T. Mankoski, 95, of East Moline went to be with the Lord Sunday July 9, 2017 after a long healthy life ended by a brief battle with cancer. She died at her home surrounded by family. Genesis Hospice provided amazing care, comfort and support to Helen and her family. Visitation will be 4-6 PM Tuesday at Van Hoe Funeral Home, East Moline. Additional visitation at Christ United Methodist Church, East Moline from 9-10 AM Wednesday with the funeral service beginning at 10 AM at the church. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, East Moline. Memorials may be made to Christ United Methodist Church or to Humility of Mary Shelter, Davenport, Iowa which provides support to people experiencing homelessness. Helen Nalevanko was born Feb. 9, 1922, in a farmhouse in Monroe County, Iowa, the daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth Kapinus Nalevanko. Helen grew up during the Great Depression together with seven brothers and four sisters. She attended a one-room schoolhouse with all eight grades taught together by one teacher. She married Frank Mankoski on May 6, 1950 in East Moline. He died Mar 6, 2010. Helen enjoyed being a homemaker and avid gardener. She and Frank loved fishing and living on the Rock River well into their 80's. Helen was a longtime member of St. Anne Catholic Church, East Moline. She and husband Frank were active in the East End Bolders Club, Moline where they enjoyed dancing and playing rolle bolle. Helen was quite good at rolle bolle; her team won the Western League Championship in 1996. Survivors include her daughters Linda (Kirby) Marks, Thornton, CO, Kathy (Bruce) Meadows, Rochester, MN, Rita (Vince) Weinert, East Moline, grandchildren, Chris Marks, Berthoud, CO, Kara (Jamie) Nuss, Mesa, AZ, Brian Meadows, Stewartville, MN, Andy (Ashleigh) Weinert, East Moline, Ben (Sarah) Weinert, Moline, Jimmy (Ali) Weinert, Belleville, WI, and 5 great-grandchildren. Helen is also survived by one sister, Anne Crosson, Lakeville, CA and brother-in-law Robert Gibson, Oskaloosa, IA. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers (Andrew, George, Albert, Paul, Frank, Joe, Henry), three sisters (Elizabeth Budhazy, Sister Mary Margaret Nalevanko, Agnes Gibson), and a grandson Kevin Meadows.
