Obituary

Funeral services for Isidro "John" Ponciano, 74, El Paso, TX, formerly of East Moline, are 10 AM Tuesday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Silvis. Burial is in Rock Island National Cemetery, where MAVA will conduct Military Honors. Visitation is 4-7PM Monday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a rosary will be recited at 6:30 PM. John died Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at Del Sol Medical Center, El Paso. Memorials may be made to the Quad City Honor Flight. John was born May 16, 1936 in Moline, the son of Felipe and Concha (Perez) Ponciano. He served in the US Air Force. Earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in English and Masters in Educational Administration from Illinois State University. He completed his Doctoral studies at the University of Illinois. John taught English at United Township High School and at Rockridge High School. He taught bilingual education at Community Consolidated School, Palatine, IL and was the first Hispanic Assistant Principal at Holland High School, Holland Michigan. John and his brother Joe were instrumental in making the community aware and the championing of the eight men that lived on 2nd street Silvis who died for their country during WWII and the Korean War. He loved his family dearly. Survivors include his sisters and brother; Rose Terronez, Moline, Lucille Bernal, Paris, CA, Esther (Dan) Rasso, East Moline, Pauline (Joe) Mendoza, East Moline, Mary Rangel, Silvis and Cruz "Lenny" (Kathy) Ponciano, Milan, and numerous nieces and nephews.
