Obituary

Funeral services for James R. Duncan, 74, of East Moline, IL, will be 3:00PM Tuesday at Christ United Methodist Church, East Moline. Burial will be in Hampton Cemetery, Hampton, IL. Visitation will be 3:00-6:30PM Monday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a Masonic Service will be held at 6:30. Mr. Duncan died Friday, June 13, 2014, at Clarissa Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, IA. Memorials may be made to Christ United Methodist Church, where he was a member. Jim was born November 26, 1939, in Eureka, IL, the son of C. Earl and Sarah E. Whitaker Duncan. He married Brenda Durham August 4, 1963, in Streator, IL. He was a graduate of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, where he had been a life member of the Alumni for over 50 years. He taught Drivers Education at Port Byron High School for 2 years and United Township High School for 30 years, retiring in 1994. He had been a member of the Classroom Teachers Association for 6 years, Life Member National Educational Association, Life Member Illinois Retired Teachers Association, and Chairman of the Drivers and Traffic Safety Department at UTHS for 25 years. He had been a member of the Illinois High School and College Drivers Education Association where he had been District director for 5 years, Secretary for 2 years, and State President for 1 year. He worked 17 years for Van Tieghem & VanTieghem Accountants, retiring in 1997. He had been an Enrolled Agent with the Internal Revenue Service, a Certified Tax Adviser, by the National Association of Enrolled Agents, and was a member of the National Associations of Tax Preparers. Jim served his community in many ways. He served on the Board of Directors at Service Plus Credit Union, President of Service Plus Credit Union Board of Directors, served on the board of Directors of the former United Savings Association, Vice President of the Board of Directors the former United Savings Association, Past President of East Moline-Silvis Exchange Club, Past Commander of York Lodge #18, Rock Island . Survivors include his wife, Brenda; daughters, Christine M. (Gregg) Larson, Sidney, IL, Carla S. Duncan, East Moline, Cathleen R. (Charles) Gibson, Viola, IL; grandchildren, Joshua and Sarah Gibson, Elisabeth and Eric Larson; sister, Norma (Bill) Edwards, Oconto, WI.
