Funeral services for James E. "Jim" Smith, 78, of Moline, IL, will be 11:00AM Thursday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, IL. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation will be 4:00-7:00PM Wednesday at the funeral home. Mr. Smith died Sunday, November 17, 2013 at his home. Memorials may be made to Gospel Assembly Church, Moline. Jim was born July 15, 1935 in Burlington, IA, the son of Fred and Catherine Larkins Smith. He married Roberta Ennis June 25, 1954, in Moline, IL. He later married Carol Griffin in February of 1968 in East Moline. He had been a Trainmaster for the Rock Island Lines and Burlington Northern Railroad, retiring in 1996. Jim was quick with a joke and was a friend to everyone he met. He loved socializing with his friends. He enjoyed golfing, and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals Fan and Chicago Bears Fan. He was a member of the Moline Vikings Club and the East End Bolders Club, Moline. Survivors include his daughters, Teri (Bill) Kaufman, Moline, Shari (Patrick) Gall, Rapids City, IL, Traci (Rick )Connor, Port Byron, IL, Dania (Fred) Hoffman, Andover, IL, Christine Britt, East Moline; son, Darryl (Sherry) Griffin, Moline; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; ; special friend, Mary Ann Minson, East Moline. He was preceded in death by his parents; the love of his life, Carol Smith; daughter, Kari Copeland; son, Mike Griffin; and brother, R.P. Smith.
