Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a favorite charity. Jean was born to Fred C. and Maryanne (Sheil) Etzel on March 6, 1925. The youngest of ten siblings, he grew up in Rock Island and lived in the area his entire life except for his years in military service. He attended Saint Joseph Catholic grade school and high school, and was a member of the former Saint Joseph's Church in Rock Island. Jean served in the U.S. Army for the 371st Engineers during WWII from 1943 to 1946 serving in Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. His unit had been assigned to the Battle of the Bulge but got called away to work on a bridge at the last minute. He also drove for top brass. He married Rose Marie Langdon in Rock Island on June 9, 1948. Jean worked at J.I. Case Co. driving fork lift for many years and then retired from Ametek in East Moline where he had worked as an assembler. Jean loved his family and many friends and considered anyone whose need made a claim on his love as his neighbor. He enjoyed motorcycles and cars, having a great mechanical aptitude, and he also spent many happy hours having coffee at McDonald's and HyVee with his friends. Jean never met a person he couldn't like or wasn't willing to help. He raised his three daughters mostly on his own and he brought stability, joy, and humor to their lives even though the old neighborhood voted him the "strictest Dad." His life exhibited a nobility of spirit that transcends time. Those left to honor his memory include daughters Roxanne King Harms and Susan M. Vize of Rock Island, Jane Ferry Conwell; his sister Catherine F. Etzel of RI; grandchildren, Michael and David Ferry, MI, Jenifer King, Moline, John Conwell, RI, and JoAnne Vize, Milan, and Amy O'Neal, RI; great grandchildren, Zachary, Kailee, Alison and Jacob Ferry, Cayontaye "CJ," Devin, and Vanessa Vize, and Kiah O'Neal. He was predeceased by his parents; siblings, Maryanne, Fred, Jamie, Frances, Lawrence, Thomas, George, and Norbert; and by his ex-wife Rose Marie Hayes.
