Obituary

Joan M. Mullen, 85, Silvis, IL, passed away Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at Illini Restorative Care, Silvis. Memorial services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church, East Moline. Visitation will be 2:00-5:00 PM Sunday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, IL. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, East Moline, the Alzheimer's Association, or the Activity Fund at Illini Restorative Care. Joan Manley was born August 18, 1926 in Sioux City, IA, the daughter of Leonard R. and Madge Vaughn Manley. She married Alfred "Jack" Mullen June 8, 1946 in La Jolla, CA. He died November 26, 2011. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Arizona in Foods and Nutrition in 1947. She then worked at St. Mary's Hospital in Tucson, AZ from 1947-1949 as a dietitian. After moving to the Quad Cities, she studied data processing through the DARCOM Intern Program at the Rock Island Arsenal. She then worked for the Department of Army as a Computer Programer and Computer System Analyst at the Arsenal from 1966-1986, retiring January 1, 1987. She had been a member of the Junior League in Tucson, a Girl Scout Leader for 7 years in East Moline, a Certified Swimming Instructor with the Red Cross for 13 years teaching swimming lessons to many children and adults in Rock Island County, and had volunteered at Intouch Adult Day Center, Moline. She and her husband had been members of the East Moline Newcomers and volunteered as a reading tutors at Ridgewood Grade School, East Moline. She had been an avid bridge player and belonged to several card clubs. She had been an active member at First Presbyterian Church, East Moline, where she sang in the Choir since 1955. Survivors include her children, John Grant (Linda) Mullen, Davenport, Colleen Jordan, East Moline and Charles Leonard Mullen, East Moline; grandchildren, Danelle J. Jordan, East Moline and Benjamin (Emma) Jordan, Chicago. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister, Priscilla Swain, brothers, Winthrop "Windy" Manley and Vaughn Porter Manley.
