John was born July 5, 1935, in Santa Barbara, CA, the son of David T. and Jesse V. Gum Hoenshell. His childhood included growing up in the British Isles and Casper, WY. After graduating with a BA in Industrial Engineering from Montana State College, he became an Ammunition Quality Assurance Specialist. He wore his collection of Mickey Mouse ties with pride until he retired from the Rock Island Arsenal in 1992 after 30 years of service.
John met DeAnna Zimmerman on a blind date in Billings, MT. They married in a small church in Reno, NV, on September 3, 1967. His next work assignment sent him to Great Britain, where the couple returned home their favorite souvenir, Kathy. Returning to the States, the couple lived in Oregon until they moved to Iowa with their new daughter, Elizabeth.
John kept busy volunteering and with hobbies, Amateur Radio, Civil Air Patrol, having coffee around town, tinkering in his garage, and his 46 Mercury.
Survivors include his wife, DeAnna; daughters, Katherine (Mike) Pezley, Sherrard, IL, and Elizabeth V. Hoenshell, Davenport; and grandchildren, Benjamin, T. Pezley, and Alexander M. Pezley. Special thanks to Lori Rowe for all of her care.
John enjoyed the company of many fur friends.
