Funeral services for Jose "Joe" Portillo, 71, of Hampton, IL, will be 10:00 am Friday at our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Silvis, IL. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, East Moline, IL. Visitation will be 4:00-7:00 pm Thursday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a liturgy service will be held at 3:00 pm. Mr. Portillo died Saturday, October 1, 2016, at OSF Hospital, Peoria, IL. Joe was born May 25, 1945, in Juarez, MX, the son of Cornelio and Leandra Hurtado Portillo. He was raised by his uncle (step father) Cornelio Portillo and his mother. He married Patricia Garza November 16, 1964, in Galesburg, IL. He had worked at John Deere Foundry as a pattern maker, he then worked in the Computer Support System at John Deere Harvester, East Moline. He later worked a short time for Donohoo, Bettendorf, IA, and had worked as a Spanish Translator at ORA Orthopedics, Moline, for 5 years. He enjoyed all types of sports. He enjoyed playing golf and baseball. He was a St. Louis Cardinals fan. Joe enjoyed life, his favorite saying was " Life is beautiful." He loved his family deeply and had been a "father figure and mentor" to his grandsons, Thomas and Joseph Rodgers. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Patricia "Pat" Portillo, Hampton; daughter, Brenda Vandersnick, SD; grandchildren, Alexia, Ariana, and Mark John Vandersnick, Thomas and Joseph Rodgers, and Christopher and Carlotta Fernandez; brother, Netza (Virginia) Portillo, Mesa, AZ, Jesse (Anh) Portillo, Mesa, Pablo Santana, Juarez, and Luis Santana, El Paso, TX; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, daughter, Amalia "Mali" Rodgers, brother, Cuautemoc Portillo. Memorials may be made to his grandsons, Thomas and Joseph Rodgers.
