Mr. Campagna died Sunday January 22, 2017, at Illini Restorative Care Center, Silvis. Joseph Campagna was born on April 12, 1925 and raised on 19th street East Moline. The 19th street neighborhood was unique in that a variety of immigrants settled there from Belgium, Croatia, Germany, Mexico, Serbia, and Sicily from whence Joe's parents (Maria and Joseph) emigrated from in the early 1900s. Like many of his brothers and friends from the neighborhood, in his teens Joe caddied at Short Hills Country Club. Joe was also on the high school golf team, and enjoyed the game throughout his life. After graduating from UTHS, Joe, along with seven brothers, served in the military. He rose to rank of 1st Sargent in the Army, serving from 1949 – 1954. After his honorable discharge, Joe served as the General Manager of the Officers Navy Club in Newport Rhode Island. In 1956 Joe married Mary O'Connell. For several years, they owned a Dairy Queen in Middletown Rhode Island. After moving back to Silvis in the early 1960s, Joe and Mary opened The Flamingo, one of preeminent supper clubs of the time. Joe managed several other restaurants including the Brown Derby in Princeton, The Beef & Brew in Rock Island, and operated Joe's Bar & Grill in Clarence Iowa. When he was fully retired from the restaurant business Joe tended bar part-time at Short Hills where he first caddied in the 1930s, and enjoyed being a pen pal to his grandchildren. Joe is survived by his daughter Ann Marie (Mark Nelson) – Davenport, sons; Anthony (Terry) – East Moline, Joseph (Janice) – Summerfield, North Carolina, Michael (Cristin Adam) – Naperville, nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, sister Kathryn Spies – Pleasant Valley, and Mary Campagna – Naperville. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, and 6 brothers. Memorials can be made to Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Silvis. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.vanhoe.com
