Obituary

Funeral services for Joseph P. Clauw, 93, East Moline, are 10 AM Saturday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Moline. Entombment is in St. Mary's Mausoleum, East Moline, where the East Moline American Legion Post 227 will conduct military honors. Visitation is 4-7PM Friday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a Catholic Order of Forester/Church rosary will be recited at 4 PM. Joe died Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at Illini Restorative Care, Silvis. Memorials may be made to Christ the King Church. Joe was born November 24, 1917 in East Moline, the son of Achiel and Romanie (DeMolder) Clauw. He scored the first touchdown in Soule Bowl Stadium, and received his Golden Gloves in Chicago. He married Shirley Kannenberg on June 20, 1939 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Moline. He served in the US Army Air Force during WWII. Joe worked at John Deere Harvester works, East Moline and later owned an operated Clauw's Tavern in East Moline for 44 years, retiring in 1978. He was a life member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, and belonged to the East Moline Eagles, the AMVETS, Rock Island Tavern Association, Hand in Hand Bolders Club, Moline Vikings Club and the East End Club, Moline. Joe and his wife Shirley had been life members of St. Mary's Church, East Moline until its closing, and was a mass and funeral server and a Eucharistic Minister for many years. Joe was a generous, caring man who dearly loved family and time spent with his many grand and great grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing with his buddies. Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Shirley, and his daughters and sons-in-law; Patricia and Jim Versluis, Sandra and Bill Verlinden, JoAnn and Jerry Buyck, and Mary Ann Gant, all of East Moline, grandchildren; Mike Versluis, Lori Larson, Christine Briggs, Carrie Yeocum, Jon Verlinden, Jim Verlinden, Joe Verlinden, Lisa Breselow, Mark Buyck, Bryon Gant, Jaymi Belcher, Larry Gant, Joy Dodson, and Elizabeth Gant, 24 great grandchildren with one on the way, and a great-great grandson. He is preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother Frank, son-in-law Mike Gant, granddaughter-in-law Suzanne and a great grandson Ryan.
