Funeral services for Joseph P. Lampo Sr., Moline, are 11 AM Wednesday March 19, 2008 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Moline. Entombment is in St. Mary's Mausoleum, East Moline, where the East Moline American Legion Post 227 will conduct military honors. Visitation is 3-7 PM Tuesday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a liturgy will be read at 3PM. Joe passed away Saturday, March 15, 2008 at his home, surrounded by his family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Church or to Riverside United Methodist Church, Moline. Joe was born October 15, 1930 in East Moline, the son of Alphons and Mary (DeBel) Lampo. Joe graduated from St. Mary's School, East Moline and was in the class of '48 at UTHS. He enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1948 and served in the Korean War. Joe achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant before being discharged in 1952. He married Jeanette Lundeen on May 5, 1952. He began his work career at Cobert's Appliance, then Rock Island Lines Railroad, and was employed for 38 years at McLaughlin Body Co., Moline, retiring in November 1992. He had been president and manager of the McLaughlin Employee Credit Union for 32 years. Jeanette passed away October 15, 1985. They were married for 33 years and had five children together. In June of 1986, Joe married Carolyn (Culver) Cheek. This marriage added an additional four children to the family. Joe was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Moline. He was a life member of the East Moline AMVETS Post 147, a life member of the Catholic Order of Forresters, and a member of VFW Post 2056. He belonged to the Friends Circle Club and the Hand-in-Hand Bolders. Joe loved life and he knew how to share the joy that was such a part of him. He never met a stranger and everyone he met left him with a smile on their face and a lighter step because he had shared with them. He was a family man, a provider, a hard worker, a gardener, a fisherman, a friend, a true Christian and the world is a better place because he was here. Survivors include his wife Carolyn; children and spouses Mona Jean and Rodger Johnson, Lincoln, NE; Joseph P. Jr. and Vicki Lampo, East Moline; Kathy and Randy Collins, Estes Park, CO; Tom and Joan Lampo, Elmhurst, IL; and Steve and Lori Lampo, New London, PA; step children and spouses Michael Cheek, Coal Valley; Vicki and Kevin Lawson, Bloomington, IL; Julie and Eric Freedman, Franklin, MI; and Paul and Angie Cheek Moline; 21 grandchildren, a great granddaughter; sisters Anne Blomme, Silvis; MaryAnn Meincke, East Moline; and Theresa Challenger, Freeport, IL; and brothers Albert Lampo, East Moline; Gerard Lampo, Minnesota City Minnesota; and Edward Lampo, East Moline.
