Obituary

Funeral services for Joseph "Joe" Sharrar, 89, of Moline, IL, will be 2:00PM Wednesday at St. Anne Catholic Church, East Moline, IL. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, East Moline. Visitation will be 4:00-7:00PM Tuesday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a rosary will be recited at 3:30. Mr. Sharrar died Saturday, December 15, 2012 at St. Anthony's Continuing Care Center, Rock Island, IL. Memorials may be made to St. Anne Catholic Church. Joe was born October 1, 1923 in East Moline, the 7th child to George and Bessie Gottschald Sharrar. He lived from 1929-1934 in Montana with his aunt. Returning to East Moline he attended many grade schools and finished high school in Coal Valley in 1942. He entered the U.S. Army in February 1943, where he was stationed overseas with the 964th Engineering Co. of 194th Division from Illinois. After D-Day, he was transferred to the 82nd Airborne Division and trained in England as a combat engineer. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge September 1944, and the Elbe river crossing and on to Berlin until the end of the war. He was discharged from service December, 19, 1945. He married Anna Mae Gremonprez January 29, 1946 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Moline. She died October 14, 2011. He started working for his brother, George at Rimoda Pattern Co., as a pattern maker. After 28 years, George retired and Joe bought the business. Joe had been an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Moline, where he had sung in the choir for over 50 years, was Scout Master of the Boy Scout Troop for 7 years, and had been a life member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. Over the years he loved pheasant hunting in Iowa and fishing in Canada with his son, Mark and friends. Survivors include his daughter, Diane Stilwell, Tipton, IA; son, Mark (Jane) Sharrar, York, PA; grandchildren, Joseph Nosler, Christina Tygrett,and Bonnie Mathias, all who live in the vicinity of the Quad Cities along with Tyler and Justin Sharrar of York PA; 9 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, sisters, Frances Trauffer, Marie Wheelock, Dorothy Willard, Ruth Labell, Rita Youngquist and brother, George Sharrar.
