Funeral services for Joseph E. Sierra, 63, of East Moline, IL, will be 10:00 AM Saturday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Silvis, IL. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation will be 3:00-7:00PM Friday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a rosary will be recited at 6:30PM. Mr. Sierra died Monday, August 30, 2010 at Alexian Brothers Medical Center Elk Grove Village, IL. Memorials may be made to the family. Joe was born May 13, 1947 in Moline, IL, the son of Emanuel T. and Luz Maria Godinez Sierra. As a youth Joe was chosen and attended the Illinois Boys Town Camp for the American Legion. He was a graduate of United Township High School Class of '65, where he had been an active student lettering in football. At 16, Joe started working at the Rock Island Lines Railroad, Silvis, as a machinist alongside his father. He married NaDeen DeGraw May 18, 1968 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Moline. When the Rock Island Lines closed Joe went to work as a machinist for Alcoa Davenport Works. He was a member of both the Alcoa Safety Committee and the Alcoa Hispanic Enhancement Committee. He worked at Alcoa for 29 years. In 1992 due to an illness pertaining to his heart, Joe was put on a transplant list to wait for a new heart. The miracle of life was given to Joe December 1, 1994. Joe became a spokesman for various organizations creating awareness about organ and tissue donation. After his transplant Joe participated at various U.S. Transplant Games that where held across the country. Joe also enjoyed meeting fellow transplant recipients. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, NaDeen Sierra of East Moline; daughter and son-in-law, Heather and Roland Tenley of Peoria, IL; grandchildren, Meghan, Elizabeth, Sarah; mother, Luz Maria Sierra of East Moline; sisters and brothers-in-law, Estela and Jesus Villarreal of Sherrard, IL, Maria Rosario Sierra of Detroit, MI, Barbara A. Sierra of Louisville, MS; brothers and sisters-in-law, Gilbert "GiGi" and Sue Sierra of Davenport, IA, Luis A. Sierra of Iowa City, IA, Henry S. Sierra of East Moline, George W. and Dolores Sierra of East Moline, and Rev. Alexandro and Michelle Sierra of Davenport; godchildren, Andrea, Oney, Cari, and Eadie; many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, daughter, Dawn Marie Sierra, infant son Joe Emanuel Sierra Jr. granddaughter, Chynna Victoria Sierra, and brother Juan Eduardo Sierra, Online condolences may be left for the family at www.vanhoe.com
