Funeral services for Joseph VanPuyvelde, 99, of East Moline, IL, will be 10:00 am Monday at St. Anne Catholic Church, East Moline. Entombment will be in St. Mary's Mausoleum, East Moline. Visitation will be 4-6 pm Sunday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline. Mr. VanPuyvelde died Thursday, May 9, 2019.

Joe was born November 27, 1919, in East Moline, the son of Rene and Mary DeDoncker VanPuyvelde. Joe's father died when he was two years old. Mary later married George Callewaert who raised Joe as his own. Joe served in the US Army during WWII, where he was stationed in the South Pacific. He married Betty Papenhausen February 12, 1944, in San Luis Obispo, CA. She died July 3, 2002. Joe and Betty owned and operated VanPuyvelde's Market, East Moline, and in 1966 they opened Town Liquor, East Moline. He had been a member of Knights of Columbus, where he obtained 4th Degree, Svithiod Club, East End Bolder's Club, AMVETS, and the East Moline American Legion Post 227. He and Betty enjoyed traveling and wintering in Hawaii.

Survivors include his children, Rick (Lori) VanPuyvelde, Anthem, AZ, and Renee VanPuyvelde, East Moline; grandchildren, Shari VanPuyvelde, Portland, OR, and Steve (Jessica) VanPuyvelde, Burnsville, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather; wife; and sisters, Martha (Dewey) Oltman, Irene (Morry) Elder, and Madeline (Marsh) Wittevrongel.
