Joyce A. Woods, 76, of Port Bryon, IL, passed away on Sunday, November 5th, 2006 surrounded by her family at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be at 10:00pm on Thursday, November 9th, 2006 at Van Hoe Funeral Home LTD., 1500 6th Street, East Moline, IL. Visitation is from 5:00pm to 8:00pm Wednesday, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, Port Byron, IL. Joyce was born June 29th, 1930 the daughter of Lena (Francis) and Oliver J. Miller. Prior to becoming a mother, she loved to sing and had the most beautiful voice. She traveled to Chicago, IL at a very young age and became a singer for a popular Chicago radio station. They were so taken with her voice that they offered voice lessons to sing opera, which she later declined. Aside from her children, her proudest accomplishment was when she graduated in 1966 from the Rock Island County School of Nursing. She worked as a nurse for many years at Moline Public Hospital, Lutheran Hospital, Moline, IL, St. Anthony's Hospital in Rock Island, IL, Tampa Veterans Hospital in Tampa, FL, and Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center in Denver, Co. before retiring at home in Illinois. Her favorite thing to do at the end of her shift was to sneak down to the hospital nurseries and rock the babies. She believed that all babies, especially the sick ones, should be held, rocked and sang to. Joyce was a member of the Northcrest Calvary Baptist Church in Moline, IL. When she wasn't well enough to go to church, she found peace and relaxation through reading the bible and truly enjoyed bible studies at home. Her children were her life, and she loved to be surrounded by them. It was not uncommon for her to take in other children as well, many called her 'Mom'. She is survived by her sister, Marlene (Charles) Cramer, Moline, IL and brother Roland Miller, Los Angeles, CA., Her children Carole Stull, Wataga, IL, Billy Stanly, Tucson, AZ, Tom Garrett, Haleiwa, HI, Joanie (Wade) Pugh, East Moline, IL, Dave Garrett, Washington, DC, Mike (Claudia) Garrett, Haleiwa, HI, Barbara (Wayne) Weiskopf, Eldridge, IA, Joyce (Missy) Frank and the late Roger Frank, Port Byron, IL. She has 12 great grand children. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Edgar O. Miller, and husbands Ray Garrett & Jack P. Garrett.
